The weather has been so nice lately I actually thought that winter was winding down.  Reality hit hard this morning when I woke up to almost a foot of snow.  Fortunately, the Woods Cross snow plow drivers are the best and all the roads around my neighborhood were already cleared.  Did 6 laps around the neighborhood.  Every other lap I would extend the loop 1 extra block so that I could get to 9 miles.  My left hamstring is starting to get sore again.

Total Time: 1:10:46 (7:42/mile)

Andy what part of your hamstring gives you trouble? I seem to have constant battle with the high hamstring tendonitis, basically a pain right where the hammy connects to the butt. Have you found any magic formula for keeping the problem under control? I've had ok results with stretching and icing but nothing that seems to make it go completely away. Lately I've been trying some ball exercises to see if that helps. I feel like if I could get rid of it altogether I could whack 10-15 seconds of my 10K pace.

My hamstring pain is the same place as yours. It started hurting a couple of months ago after running in a snow storm. I think that I injured it because of the unstable footing. I'm terrible when it comes to injuries because I don't do anything differently. I assume that it will eventually work itself out. I have noticed that my hamstrings are very tight and I am going to start stretching them more often to see if that helps. Let me know if you find the magic cure.

This can be a real nasty problem to get rid of, I think Paul P. is dealing with it right now. I know some runners who have tried everything and never been able to get rid of it. I injured it initially by being stupid and doing back-to-back marathons just a few weeks apart. But I have noticed the slip/sliding snow running tends to aggravate it.

When I first noticed the injury I went to the PT and they said to not run on it for 4-8 weeks and do various exercises, cross-train, blah blah blah. I did all that and it didn't really help all that much. I also tried just running slow all the time but that seemed to even make it worse running the same pace all the time. I've had the best luck with a mix of slower/faster running where the slow runs are often REALLY slow. With the fast tempo runs it seems I have to do a really long warmup (2-3 miles) and some light stretching before doing the fast miles. But for some strange reason I often seem to feel the best after harder, faster running then stretching afterward. I seem to get a much more effective/healing stretch after the hard running than after the slow.

It's been interesting watching Paul's blog as he's dealt with this. There is a ton of good advice from both he and Josse on ideas for dealing with the problem.

Good luck.
